Living Room

The living room. The room in the house where we do most of our living?

How did the living room get its name? The family room was invented after the living room was named. Why do we need both rooms I wonder.

The living room was the room where many were forbidden as children. Not in the living room was a line that many of us heard as children.

Why not? Is it so sacred in there?

Life was much more formal when I was a kid. We were "meant to be seen and not heard". The basement was the place for the kids to have fun. It was where we could run around and make noise and slouch around on the furniture.

The living room was where my parents entertained their friends. They would sit around and talk before dinner was ready and have a drink.

We did not have a TV in our living room. It was in the basement.

I guess the family room is a more relaxed room where the family can gather and relax and enjoy a movie or play a game together.

What about the living room? I don't think the living room gets much use these days. Maybe on a special occasion like Christmas if the Christmas tree is in the living room. Maybe on Thanksgiving or Easter when everyone is visiting before dinner is served.

Our living room on the other hand is used every day. It is a casual room where we do just that. Live. We watch TV in the living room, have meals on our laps in the living room, hang out by the fire in the living room. It is the main room in our house where we relax.

Life is for living. Why not live it in the living room.
