Grandfather Clocks
The grandfather clock is an object rich with history, significance, and utility. To purchase a grandfather clock is to purchase an entire personal narrative, which needs to be explained to be understood. The original story that transformed the longcase clock into the grandfather clock involves two brothers named Jenkins who worked in a hotel in England. It is fabled that when one of them died, the grandfather clock started to lose time irreparably, and that when the other brother finally went as well, the grandfather clock stopped altogether-and was never again repaired by the hotel out of nostalgia. A song was then written, inspired by the story, called "My grandfather's clock"-the song chronicled the life of the singer's grandfather using the grandfather clock as a metaphor, and the term was born.
This narrative detailing the birth of the term is entirely relevant because of the fact that the grandfather clock is both a beautiful heirloom-style object as well as a great timepiece. Usually carved quite finely, the grandfather clock has a "head" which is referred to as a "bonnet," delighting lovers of beautiful things throughout the ages. The long pendulums swing back and forth at an even pace, and the clicking of the grandfather clock is very distinctive. The clock usually "strikes" the hour (or fraction of), a sound which soon becomes overly familiar to anyone who owns one of these clocks. Pairing a grandfather clock with Victorian or otherwise Classical furniture is a great idea as it makes for a well-rounded aesthetic suitable to any home with a past.
