Hummingbird Feeder
What to put in your hummingbird feeder
Hummingbirds get the energy they need to maintain their astonishing metabolism mainly from flower nectar and the sugar water they find at their local hummingbird feeder.
For protein and other nutrients, they also eat soft-bodied insects and spiders, which as a bird lover, you can supply as well. Try setting out some overripe fruit--banana peels are good beside your hummingbird feeder to attract flies for your hummers.
Choosing a hummingbird feeder
There are many ingeniously styled hummingbird feeders available, and they're sold mostly in birding shops and garden centers, or by mail order. Most hummingbird feeders are made of plastic, glass, or ceramics. Hummingbirds don't yet recognize hummingbird feeder instinctively as food sources, they must learn to use them, which they do from watching other hummers and though their own natural inquisitiveness.
When you put your hummingbird feeder out, you must be patient, because the little hummers need time to discover it and feed from it.
Buy a hummingbird feeder with perches
Believe or not hummers can get fatigued hovering about all the time compared to their normal flight. Hummers actually spend about 80% of their time perching. So get a hummingbird feeder with perches, and help the little creatures save calories. Perches also attract hummers because they can rest and spend more time at your hummingbird feeder, drinking until they're nice and full.
Where to place your hummingbird feeders
If you want to watch the little hummers feeding, place your hummingbird feeder near a window.
Filling your hummingbird feeders
Once you have chosen an easy to clean and fill hummingbird feeder, the next thing is to fill it with sugar water to supplement the birds' natural diet. You don't have to buy "nectar mixes" which have vitamins and proteins, as the hummers get all that stuff from the flower nectar and insects they eat.
