Attic
The attic in older houses can be a great place to put a bedroom.
Often the walls which are actually following the slant of the roof can be really interesting.
Dormers are usually put in the attic to allow light and crate a feeling of more openness and space.
The other part to renovating an attic is that you have to consider how you are going to get up there.
Our attic is accessible through a square board in the ceiling that you push up. Then you climb up a ladder and into the attic.
Stairs can certainly be added but they do take up space on the second floor.
You might also want to consider how long you want to live in the attic. If you are close to retirement, you might want to consider your health and think about how many years you will be able to climb 2 sets of stairs to get up to your bedroom.
Ofcoarse the attic is a great place for storage of old family treasures and junk. I often think of an attic as kind of a sacred place where secrets are hidden. I think that must come from movies where you see people up in the attic looking through old boxes of pictures and antiques that have been passed from generation to generation.
The other thought I have about an attic is when it is used in a scary movie and the psychopath comes out of the attic to get the people who live in the house.
The attic is often just a space in the house above where you live but below the roof. It doesn't have anything in it but a bunch of cobwebs, bugs and probably a bat or two. It's kind of dead space just sitting there.
I've lived in our house for 15 years and never ventured up to the attic.
Not planning to any time soon either.
